5 Things No One Mentions About Engagement Photos (But You’ll Want to Know)

Spray Tan Shades Matter

Planning to get a spray tan before your session? Just a quick tip: think about how it’ll photograph next to your fiancé’s natural skin tone. When one person has a noticeably warmer, spray-tanned glow and the other doesn’t, it can create a sharp contrast in close-up shots — especially when you're cheek-to-cheek. A subtle, natural look tends to photograph best for both of you!

Some spray tans can lean very warm (or orange), and when paired with a cooler or more neutral-toned partner, it can throw off the overall balance in close-up shots. A more natural, even-toned tan tends to photograph best and helps you both look like you're glowing together. Editing can help a little, but it’s not magic. When in doubt, choosing a shade that’s closer to your natural tone usually photographs best.

Movement Makes the Magic

Some of the most beautiful, in-the-moment photos come from movement - walking hand-in-hand, twirling in a field, or chasing each other like you're flirting during your first date again!  Those candid motions help create timeless images that feel as natural as the moments they’re capturing.

And if standing in front of the camera doesn’t come so naturally, I always guide my couples into soft, natural motion during the session.  Sometimes it may feel a little silly in the moment, but it almost always leads to the most genuine, effortless-looking images.  Trust me, even the prompts that feel a bit unexpected can photograph so naturally.  Wearing clothing that lets you move comfortably and confidently and feel like yourself makes it all so much easier - and so much more you.

Heel Height vs. Fiancé Height

Rocking heels can absolutely elevate your look, but one little check-in beforehand can save you a lot of surprise on the day-of.  If heels put you significantly taller than your fiancé and that’s not the vibe you want in photos, a lower block heel or stylish flat still brings elegance without the height difference.  That said, if you’re both good with it - go for it!  Just remember, your confidence matters and so does your fiancé’s (even if he’s not the type to say much about it).  A quick check-in ahead of time can make sure you both feel your best - and that always makes a difference in your photos!

What You’ll Do with Your Hands

This one may sound minor, but it makes a huge difference.  Things like phones, car keys, or sunglasses in pockets can be distracting in photos, especially in clean, editorial-style images.  Make sure your pockets are empty, remove any ponytail holders or smartwatches that don’t match your style, check that your nails are photo-ready, and keep an eye out for details like watch tan lines.  If you normally wear a watch daily but don’t want it in your photos, consider taking it off a few days before your session to let the line fade.  Another option is to wear something during the shoot so the mark doesn’t stand out on its own.

As far as overthinking hand placement - don’t worry - I’ll guide you with natural prompts so your hands always feel relaxed and effortless, not awkward.  Let that be one less thing to stress about while you’re planning your session!

Weather Prep Isn’t Just for Rain

While rain gets all the attention, it’s actually wind, humidity, and strong sun that tend to affect sessions more.  A little “just in case” kit can go a long way:  bring a hairbrush, hair ties or clips, powder to minimize shine, and a jacket that compliments your outfit - especially if we’re starting early.  Wearing something flowy or low cut?  Fashion tape or safety pins are great for quick fixes.  Lip balm, blotting papers, and a mini deodorant can help you stay fresh and comfortable throughout the session. And if you’re up for it, leaning into whatever the weather brings can lead to some of the most unique and unexpected images. Wind in your hair, dramatic skies, fog in the air…all of it can add a little coziness and magic.

And don’t forget to bring a drink you love!  Whether it’s water, soda, or a cozy coffee to sip between shots, staying hydrated (and happy!) for the both of you is always a good idea.
